The Standard

A community foundation's governing body approves policies to prevent perceived, potential or actual conflicts of interest.

Underlying Rationale

Beyond mere compliance with state rules governing conflicts of interest, as an institution predicated on public trust and accountability, the community foundation must avoid not only impropriety, but also the appearance of impropriety. Proper policies and procedures governing conflicts not only assure legal compliance, but also enhance the reputation of the organization as one dedicated to fair-minded and ethical behavior.
