The Principle

Our governing board respects donor intent and later generations’ interests while also considering the demands of a changing world.

Underlying Rationale

Balancing the good intentions of the foundation’s founder and later generations isn’t easy. Successors should preserve the founder’s vision while crafting a philanthropic focus that is meaningful and engaging for the current board. A third element—current needs—also must be factored into foundation decisionmaking. Respect donor intent and later generations’ interests while also considering the demands of a changing world.
